Truck is absolutely inoperable without power steering. I lost an accessory belt at 65 exiting a highway coming up to a 4 way signal changing to a red light and 5 teens in the YXL Denali.

No brakes, no steering, steam pouring out of hood as there’s no coolant circulation either. I could only get a 1/4 turn on the wheel, hammered the E brake on and both feet on the brake going downhill. I wasn’t stopping.

Fortunately I got through the light right after it went red. The intersection was huuggge because it was under a train trestle, so my wide turn didn’t cause the 3T behemoth to plant into anyone or anything.

I rolled into a parking lot across the street from a “stripe club” where AAA towing abandoned us for 3 hours. THIS is the reason GM quietly went to electric power steering in 2015. If it goes, you might not make it out to talk about it. You’re just talking about the p/s not the entire accessory belt but no steering is just as exciting.

...There is a known issue occurring with p/s fluid, the OE GM fluids in particular that pisses off the p/s pump and causes cavitation. ...
Which fluid is better? I replaced my power steering fluid some time ago and thought that the pump is still a bit noisy even with new oil in the system. I used Amsoil Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Power Steering Fluid which is compatible with GM 89021184.

I once lost power steering (hydroboost brake setup) on my old K3500 CCLB. I left my house loaded with like 3,000 lbs of busted concrete and rock headed to the landfill. I did hear a whine pulling out of my driveway but didn't think much of it.

At my first my red light stopped the brake pedal went to the floor and when I took off I discovered I lost power steering assist. I was about 2 miles down the road. I popped the hood and nothing seemed wrong. I decided to limp back home. Good thing is there was a 20 MPH school speed zone. I literally rode on my brakes with my foot on them and used the e-brakes as extra braking power at the red light. It was pretty scary but I had to just keep calm and thank God there was very little traffic at that time. It was like 2:30 pm.

What had happened is the PS pump pulley shaft sheared off inside and the pulley was just freewheeling. When I tried the pulley puller the thing just slid out!

I’m not sure what the Indi replaced the OE p/s fluid with but he said it was 3x as much as OE. It took about 2-3 weeks of driving, working the p/s system. That made it quiet down. It eventually got all the air out of the system.

Of course… when one thing fails on these it all fails.
