I am getting mixed answers to the question, "When did the Denali start getting AFM?" I realize the '07/'08 DO NOT have AFM. As for the '09, there are mixed answers on this site, as well as on google.

I want to eventually buy a 6.2L Denali without AFM, and would like a correct answer regarding the '09.

Thanks for all the help you guys give...great respect for this site.

2009 Denalis (and Escalades) have the L9H, which is non-AFM and adds flex fuel, which the earlier L92 did not have. Yes, I am certain. :)

To be a bit more specific, the 2007/2008 L92 6.2L engine had the hardware installed in the engine for AFM but did not have the software in ECM programmed to enable it. 2009 the L9H 6.2L had no AFM hardware components in the engine or the software in the ECM programming to run it, so it was completely AFM free.

@Geotrash nailed it. There used to be quite a bit of speculation in the GM 07-14 full size SUV with or without AFM.

The Non AFM sweet spot really only applies to the 07-09 Denali & Esky where the 6.2L was the only option. 09 also ran e85 with bigger injectors.

* 07-14 Tahoe, Burb, Yukon with 5.3L ALL have AFM.

* A hand full of Early 07 (Mfg in 06) 6.2L have AFM hardware in motor but no software to control it. See link…

* 07, 08, 09 Denali, Escalade and only the unicorn 09 6.2L Tahoe do NOT have AFM hardware.

* All 08-13 Hybrid Tahoe, Yukon & Escalade with the 6.0L have AFM.

* All 07-13 Yukon & Suburban 2500 / 3/4 T do NOT have AFM hardware on their 6.0L.

* The 07 & 08 Tahoe
/ Yukon with the 4.8L V8 do NOT have AFM.

* 09 Yukon AFM - Yes
* 09 Yukon Denali AFM - No

You’re biggest possible / potential future expenses on an 09 are …
- Peeling clear coat (-$1.5k)
- Transmission (-$5k)
- Active Suspension (-$1.5k)

All above are no big deal. Just be sure to have the seller comp you appropriately for it.

Don't discount buying a newer Denali and deleting AFM physically or turning it off in a tune. The system was much more reliable in the later years,

This has a lot of merit - up to and including the 2020 model year.

To the OP, I did a mechanical delete with my 2012 and ended up with a more powerful engine, to boot. You can get a 2018 Denali with the 10-speed for not that much, relatively speaking.

The early, early L92 motors had AFM installed, but that was discontinued after April 2006 motor manufacture date.

From Summit Racing:

Upgrading the L92 Camshaft and Valvetrain

VVT is great in a street vehicle if you install a VVT cam and phaser-limiter along with a tune.

Properly done, it makes more power and torque than a much bigger engine-yet idles well and retains most of the gas mileage. If you don’t want to mess with it, you can easily convert to a standard non-VVT one- or three-bolt cam.

[Read LS Tech: How to Delete Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on an LS Engine for more info and part numbers.]

Here’s some neat trivia: The L92 actually had a first and second design.

The first design, built prior to April 1, 2006 contained AFM components, but were left disconnected from the ECM.

The second design eliminated the AFM components altogether. If you’re doing a cam swap and have one of the earlier engines, now is a good time to use an AFM delete kit.
