1. Is there a module etc, that might be failing to cause a ridiculous shut down of the 4 or restart of all cylinders @ any speed?

2. Not looking for a plug in device to your OBD.

3. Reflashing the BDCM needed?

4. Don’t really care what it does to save mileage, it’s ******** it sucks it drives me nuts in traffic kicking in and out.

5. My opinion should only work at highway speeds & not anything above 35-40 STOOOPID!

You can use a handheld tuner to turn it off in the pcm or get a tune from Black Bear. If you can find a local tuning shop you can have them turn it off for you.

Depending on the year of your truck you can drive in M5 when in town.

I plan to get a tune from Black Bear but am running a Range plug in for now. Works good.

A tune then it is. Wasn’t sure if there is a part that needs to be replaced after so many thousand miles. Kind of like changing the air filter for lack of a better thing to replace.

Lots of good discussion on here if you search AFM but the consensus is clean oil and a quality filter are the best preventative maintenance you can do. Disabling it is preferred by pretty much everyone. It is agreed that a tune is by far the best option. Mine did the same as yours and drove me nuts in less than a week.

A tune to keep it from activating would be the best and cheapest stopgap. Plus you can have it tuned for better transmission shifting characteristics and throttle response. This would cost more, but you'd probably actually enjoy driving it in the city instead of loathing it. I had mine tuned to turn off AFM as well as removing the speed limiter and rear O2 sensors and reducing Torque Management by a local tuner for $150. An actual power tune would've been a few hundred more. I'd say "one-and-done" it and get a full tune from Black Bear. It'd be a relatively small price to pay to fall in love with your ride again.

Great advise from everyone above. By the way, I am a bit OCD and this #5 statement made no sense to me but I understood what you meant.

"5. My opinion should only work at highway speeds & not anything above 35-40 STOOOPID!"

I believe you meant "below" 35-40 mph.

If I am wrong, I apologize.

Really apologize not necessary!

It sounds idiotic, driving this truck at between 75-80 MPH today on the highway in 4 cyl mode makes sense. I still had the speed and ease. I would welcome the ability to keep afm here but not at slower speeds. I know it’s one or the other.

What got me aggravated was the stumble stutter hesitation at surface street speeds stop n go traffic. It’s not refined like it is at highway speeds.

I will 100% agree with anyone that says regular oil change with a good filter is necessary. To this I add my 03 Silverado extended cab 4x4 5.3 liter with nearly 700,000 miles on it! Motor has NOT been touched except for normal things. Water pump, 2 injectors and one set of coil packs. I’m replacing the heads this weekend as the original cast iron 706 heads have cracks letting coolant pass into the exhaust ports. Aluminum 862’s are what’s going on.

I turned my AFM off with the diablo tuner. Kept the stock tune just modified it and also raised the idle 100 RPM. Crappy GM idle. Too low. Smooth as butter now. But yes AFM should only be used at highway speeds.
