So what happens when you climb a 6% grade or are towing into a headwind? Come on now, 14,606 all day every day? Im not doubting that you do it, but i question not being underpowered while doing so. unless you are pulling a flatbed with little to no wind resistance?
There's not much for long mountain runs in Minnesota. .

I swear everywhere we tow out west there are grades to contend with, and we live in the ca high desert where 35/40 mph headwinds are not uncommon. dragging a travel trailer that is higher than the tow vehicle roof is like bringing your own hill with you!

I gave up my 03 suburban 2500 with the 4 speed to tow with this for comfort. The ride is softer and the gears don't hunt. The suburban did like 60 to 65 max before it really started to hunt around. Too fast and it dropped to third permenantly which is worse. I did that for years and really just hated it.
I picked up this one for 4k with a salvage title and a dropped valve. I compared the cost of a duramax conversion vs stroked/supercharged. I'm in this for like 8 or 9k. Don't get me wrong I'm sure the duramax would have had its problems but the little stuff on this one is killing me. I could of leveled a character to 100 in WOW in less time it took to learn the hp tuners software.

As for gas mileage? I got 8.7 to 9.5 all day in the suburban. I get slightly better than that but am going much faster. I've tried just 6th and the the haul mode. I don't see a difference. I go with whatever is comfortable.

I don't keep track but I think I just burned 58 (memory) to go 547 on the map with a few naps where I keep the car running.

One leg of that was tehachapi to vegas. 243 miles in less than 24 gallons.

Thanks for the info, Our family is at a crossroad's with RV'ING. we have a 22ft aljo lite, 5,500 lbs loaded and bought the denali to tow it. It does fine, but the cost to bring the RV is more expensive to tour than to use hotels. We love the convenience/comfort/cleanliness/cooking but at what cost? Hey but yours is a success story, get your temps under control and your done! Its airflow, what is trans temp while towing?

Dealing with engine heat . It always radiator. And huge electric fans . They kept this GM 7.4 liter cool with biggest radiator . Fan on engine and huge 2 foot electric fan in front of Radiator. 454 with 4:88 gears . It's a power house. It will tow anything you hook to it . Has carburetor style injection. 10 mpg loaded or empty. Power bands right at 1650 RPMs it gives overdrive a nice feel. 385 ftlbs torque basically at idle . 9bc245f80d7bcf53f9d67b66a794476c.jpg

Yeah, and it has like a third the hp and thus a third the heat energy to remove as the original posters rig.
