Thanks for the pointers. I'll have to try the cigar smoke trick. The only issue with ordering the gaskets first is the fact that I would be stuck with finding an OEM intake manifold. If I go with an entire new dorman intake manifold it will come with gaskets for much less $.
Well then do this test I pulled from AllData
9. Inspect the intake manifold cylinder head deck for warpage.
9.1. Locate a straight edge across the intake manifold cylinder head deck
surface.
9.2. Position the straight edge across a minimum of two runner port
openings.
Insert a feeler gauge between the intake manifold and the straight edge.
An intake manifold with warpage in excess of 3 mm (0.118 inch) over a 200 mm (7.87 inch) area is warped and should be replaced.
Here's the kicker....Once you pull it to check for warping you'll need to replace the gasket.
