Anyone running a 285/50/20 instead of 275/55/20 on drop?

Time to replace my 275/55/20s on factory LTZ wheels. What’s everyone running and not rubbing on???

Had 285/50’s nitto 420s installed when I bought my Denali wheels. I hated them and the worst tire I’ve driven on. Pulled hard with ruts in the road and when rainy it would constantly hydroplane due to the tires pulling themselves right back into the ruts where the standing water is. Grip was pretty solid in cornering tho. I had mine on a 9” rim, which is the optimal size. I thought they looked bulbous and would be better suited for a 9.5-10” wheel personally.

I’ll be honest, the tires were pretty old, manufactured in 2011, and there was some small cracking on the sidewall, so the age very well could of influenced things. But I do believe it was mostly due to it’s ridiculous width and pretty thick aspect ratio. With that width, the sidewall just didn’t have the rigidity. Stick to a 275 series and drop down to a 50 series if you’re low.

what kind of drop? 2/3? 3/5?

for reference a 285/50r20 is 31.2" tall x 11.2" wide and the stock 275/55r20 is 31.9" tall x 10.8" wide, so they are .7" shorter and .4" wider...considering the stock tire is 31.9" tall how much shorter of a tire are looking for?

3/5, found a post where 285/50s were popular so I ordered. Hope I don’t regret! lol

Not much difference and thought the tire looked stuffed a bit w 275/55/20.

Ran 295/35/24s and 305/40/22 previously so I should be ok... [emoji51]

Well width difference was .39 but coopers site shows 275/55 at 11.1 vs 285/50 at 11.9.

That’s a big difference....I may keep stock 275/55 as seems more common. Don’t want to hassle install and then return if issues.

i have my 2001 tahoe dropped 4" front, and 5" rear, with 275/55/20. I personally hate the bridgestone dueler alenza tires, they ride like shit, hydroplane terribly, and are all over the road. I considered buying 285/50/20's but im leaning more towards a 265/50/20, and going a little lower. The width of the 285 will rub the hell out of the plastic liners on turns, corners etc, as my current 275/55's do. and the 275/55/20 looks almost stupid because the sidewall is so large, and the rim is so small. if you do mount up the 285/50's please post some pictures.

Thanks! Yea going wither cooper discoverer HTP for $500. Didn’t want to risk rubbing and no plans to lower it more.
