The project has been ongoing. Last week it was discovered that I had neglected to buy certain tools and bought the wrong rebuild kit. That has since been rectified. We measured the rotational torque and backlash on the two donor axles and pulled the seals, bearings and ABS reluctor wheels out of one yesterday before quitting time. My helper put several gouges into the metal around the wheel seals trying to get the old ones out. I'll have to fix that if we use that axle housing.@swathdiver did you ever change up the gear ratios? I've been toying around with changing my 2008 Denali to either 3.73 or 4.10 and just make it a true mountain climber. I think these gear choices may be a better fit with not having 4-LO.
Also, how do you plan to work around the front differential if you drop in a unit from a truck with selectable 4WD?
My truck is a 4x4, so it is just a swap with regards to the front differential. I used to think that the only difference between an AWD and 4x4 front differential was the tube on the passenger side. LT Tolman discovered otherwise and showed us the internal differences on his youtube channel while building the little orange truck.
If you search this forum back to about 3-6 years ago, there were several guys overlanding with our generation Denalis and the AWD system. I don't think any of them changed gears but can see the value in doing so.
