Automatic Display Screen Dimming?

Day and Night modes works just fine but the automatic option for dimming between the two does not work when selected....anyone have a reason for this option not to be working?

Auto means it adjusts with your dome lights.

I read on another site that you can't have your dome light knob turned all the way up. So I turned it down a couple notches and now my screen auto dims.
