hows your plasti dip holding up on the body? how many coats is it?

i have my bumpers and grille dipped 2 coats and the grille ended up getting chips (after about 7 months) so i redipped and coated it with 3 coats of semi gloss engine enamel and it's amazing how great that's holding up.

I would use at least 4 coats of plasti dip.

i figured id ask him because i like that flat look as opposed to the gloss and i'd hate to get it all done then it chip up

i want mine dipped to see if id be okay painting it matte black

Sorry man I didnt see your post till just now , Yates hit it spot on 4 coats is preferred , I used 3 and to be honest I wish i used 4 , my dip is holding up GREAT! I do have small 2 (2-3 inch ) cuts/tears in it currently due to Rausch Creeks stupid tight brush trails, In all honesty the way I was rubbing against trees and bushes Im surprised any of it survived. :yaoface2:

Other than that Its been great , no fading , One stain due to some brake fluid I dripped on the bumper. but i couldn't be happier

a few tips is you really need to clean the truck very well before you apply it , No wax, dirt or water (condensation) can be present , This causes the dip to lift and bubble and ultimately chip. I can speak from experience the best way to do it is with the DYC kit , as there dip is thinned making it easier to apply evenly . also the surface comes out less textured and has a bit more of a "matte shine" i guess you could say.

i experienced this when i removed my dip and reapplied it. i left it outside and like a dummy i didnt re-prep it :nono:
but it was only the grille that was affected. when i did my bumpers i just used lacquer thinner followed by wax&grease remover and ive never had a single problem.

did you dip yours panel by panel?

Yea prepping is Key ,
I actually tapped off the entire truck when I did mine , that actually took more time than actually dipping did, Again take your time doing that it will make or break your job, I had to redo my tailgate because I was rushing at the end. I have to say the only panel on the truck that is a real pain is the hood , The next time I dip it Im going to remove it , it was difficult to get even coats on it because your working over your head. It didnt turn out bad ,dip seems to be easier to apply evenly than paint but I do have a few textured spots on the hood . The real advice I can give is do very light coats in the beginning , that will help you when you start your final coat.

did you have any spots that wanted to stick to the tape and peel with it?

yea i understand the painting over your head thing. i repainted my roof and it wasnt exactly easy
