I just dipped mine without removing it.

Blue painters tape, 4 quick coats (without allowing any dry time), and immediately removing the tape to prevent peeling.

You Don't have to take the bumper off. I did mine a while back and it's basically almost the same steps as removing your bowtie. Except a lot more fun. You have to remove everything, to where all that's left on the truck is the center of the front, I don't know what it is. But it's attached to the bumper. Chrome piece and the honeycomb come out together. Once you that out. You can take the chrome of the honeycomb stuff. I used lots of patience and a few butter knives and I broke a few chrome tabs.

hmm both look good. think i may just try leaving it on dont have enough patience to try taking it off and knowing my luck i will break all the tabs and be SOL. so the trick is not allowing dry time between coats and taking tape off right away? when i did my bow ties it was a B!+(# taking the tape off it kept trying to peel it all off. also how far out did you tape? and did you spray real close to prevent spreading to other places if so how did that do on even coverage?

I used newspaper. I taped it on about an inch from the lines, then covered the rest with tape. I folded about an inch on the end of each piece of tape on an edge so I could peel it real easy. The key is to pull the tape before it dries, as that's when it'll peel. On the grill, it's not as bad because the line around the chrome will likely break up the dip and keep it from peeling even if you don't pull the tape right away. I tried racing strips and that's where the quick peeling came in to play. I ended up going back and doing several more coats (lots of bugs in my area for some reason), and the dip doesn't rip when a big bug hits it now. Once I get the gumption, I'm going to peel the dip and actually paint the chrome now that I know I like the look.

I was at the bodyshop today and they told me that painting over the stock chrome grill will lead to chipping/flaking and it is best to buy a paintable grill instead.

This is very true but with plasti-dip if it chips u can touch it up easily. And it only cost 7 bucks. I did my about 6 months ago, no chips and no fading. I also live in the south bugs year round.
