Brake light problem 99 Tahoe LT

Well this seems to be a problem for most. I was hoping someone could help or add an earlier thread that would help with this. I am new to the forum and funny how a problem can get us to know each other! My name is ***** and I recently bought a 99 Tahoe LT with 100K miles. Real good condition. Here is the problem seems to be common with most.

I tap the brakes and the lights light up, as I push the pedal down, the lights shut off. If I let off the brakes tap them again and slowly push down I can get the lights to work..most of the time. Fuse is good. I know that most say it could be the brake light switch, however I could not find it on the brake pedal. Can anyone inform me where the switch is at and also a schematic how to get at it to replace it?

it is on the brake pedal. probably colored whit or black with a wire harness connected to it. just follow the brake pedal upwards.

I don't know if I will be of any help but I also have a 1999 Yukon and I'm having the same problem. I depress the brake pedal and they come on at first, but go off as the brake pedal goes down further. I have replaced the brake light switch which is at the top of the brake pedal. It is difficult to get to, but it can be done. I proped up a light to be able to see in there and then pried a retainer clip off of the stem/pin that holds the light switch on. I think the Chevy dealer is the only place that has the retainer clip ($1.58). I recommend buying two, because it's easy to drop trying to reinstall it. Something up in there ate the first one I dropped. Never could find it, so I had to wait till the next day and get a second one.

All that being said, replacing the switch did not fix my problem so if you come up with another solution, I would appreciate you passing the information along. I will do the same if I find a fix.

*****, and Ron C I had the same problem with brake lights coming on then going right out and this did the trick. It was also was hard to shift out of park. Got this from another forum. GL if you have big hands like myself.

here's the alldata write-up for it:







Removal

1.Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2.Disable the SIR.

3.Remove the pushrod retainer from the brake pedal pin. Use snap ring pliers.

4.Unsnap the stoplamp switch from the pushrod.

5.Disconnect the electrical connector from the stoplamp switch.



Installation

1.Connect the electrical connector to the stoplamp switch.

2.Snap the stoplamp switch onto the pushrod.

3.Install the pushrod retainer on the brake pedal pin. Use an 11 mm (7/16 inch) socket in order to push a new clip onto the pin.

4.Connect the negative battery cable.

5.Enable the SIR.
