Hey everyone. I seem to have a series of rather challenging brake problems. My system is hydroboost on a 2005 Tahoe. I am having the following problems with my brakes:

1) little to no brakg action until the pedal is pressed about the halfway point.

2) Brake pedal is noticeably slow to return when cold outside.

3) Brake pedal seems spongy through the entire length of travel.

4) Vehicle intermittently ( non-sequentially repeatable) pulls to left or right side when braking as less than 45mph to stop speeds.

5) Overall brake feel is sloppy, pads apply poorly and overall system does not inspire any confidence when braking while towing or even when braking during regular city stop and go driving. System just seems piss poor!

My concern is that these issues could be serious. Could not say if problems happened after brake service or if issues were preexisting. After more than 20 years of experience, I have never encountered these issues with other GM vehicles up until this model year. Before this Tahoe my experience was limited to pre-2003 models.

To help clarify the situation here is some history about my truck. 156K miles. I just did a complete brake job a year ago with new ACDelco calipers, rotors, ebrake kits, pads, fluid, new master cylinder, flex lines (the works other than hard lines). Have also done 2 additional brake bleeds with the past year to see if air might be the issue.

Post major brake service I have done the necessary troubleshooting required such as inspecting calipers, bleeding the brakes and lubricating the slide pins. Both for a second and third time. My concern is that I may not be bleeding all the air out or that it is trapped somewhere I am not familiar with. Another possibility I have researched is the hydroboost needs to be rebuilt. I also cannot rule out the possibility of contaminated or wrong fluid in the past. Brake fluid seems to be getting dark relatively early. Any help or familiarity with these issues would be extremely helpful. Thanks for any help!

Have you verified the hydraboost pump is working?

I tested the hydroboost accumulator and I get several brake applications with engine off before the brake pedal becomes stiff. I also have replaced the power steering pump twice. Each time I replaced the powere steering pump I have gotten a slight whine. But even after both power steering pump replacements there never seems to be any difference in braking action. I always get the same symptoms from what I previously explained in my first post. YEAH I thought it might be a power steering pump issue as well....but no dice. I suppose my accumulator in the hydroboost could be weak (spring or charge) but I have no experience with hydroboost other than theory of operation.

Let me back up. Has the brakes system ever been ok since you cracked the hydraulic section open? If not then the first thing I would do is bleed it again but NOT like we use to on the older cars. The ABS systems are nearly impossible to bleed all the way using the old bleed procedures we are so accustomed to. You are gonna need a tech 2 OR gravity bleed works well. I have done (2) 2003 Tahoes of mine using that procedure and it turned out fine. I now have a ****** clone tech 2 for any future brake jobs with ABS.

Hey Mike. Are you saying that you have experienced my exact issues in the past as well? it really seems that it may come down to the proper procedure for bleeding the brakes. I know, it seems dumb. I have done the gravity bleed as well. I will keep at it but it seems unnecessarily repetitive and I am wasting brake fluid by the gallon.

I guarantee that if I go out and bleed my brakes one more time that I will still have the same issues. I know how to bleed brakes but I am left a bit despondent knowing that the ABS system may be screwing me.

Yup! Not exactly because neither of my tahoes have hydroboost.(My 05 Yukon Denali does) But should be close enough the same.
When you did your gravity bleed did you lock the brakes up (Force a ABS active situation) after you did all 4 corners of bleeding? You shouldnt have to go through gallons! You do all 4 corners and then lock the brakes up going slow in your driveway, yard, etc. This forces the ABS solenoids and pump to go active and that should force residual air back to you 4 corners then do a gravity bleed again and shoudl be good to go.
Or you can buy a ****** GM Tech 2 for around $260 and it is the same thing the GM stealerships use to service your Brakes. It actually has a automated function in the Tech 2 that does everything but crack the bleeders open for you. It cycles the solenoids and pump of the ABS system.
