Was following my son the other day and his brake lights stopped working. Got to the cabin and checked all the fuses and they were fine. Did some research and found that the brake switch could be bad. The brake lights are working again but I don't like the idea of something being wrong and not addressing it.

2005 Yukon, right at 300,000 miles. I have ordered a new brake switch and an extra clip. Any advice or warnings before I try and contort under the dash?

Took it to a mechanic. Worth a hundred for me not to have to contort under there. All good now.

So, I had a local shop do the switch for me since I was so worried about getting under there and not breaking that clip. They decided to take the lower half of the dash off, remove the BCM and all the other stuff under the dash and replace the switch that way. Now the truck is not drivable because they messed something up when they did it. Service Brake System DIC is on. Parking brake light is on. ABS light is on. Truck is in limp mode. Had another mechanic look at it last night (friend) and he has no idea why they took everything out but did note they they put stuff in wrong and he corrected the reinstall. A wire somewhere under the dash seems to have been damaged and taking it to a GM shop today.

Here's the kicker. The shop said this happened because I brought in my own part (brake light switch). So me buying the actual GM part versus them buying an aftermarket part is the issue in their eyes.

Wtf?!? That’s it a shop I’d ever use again!

I won't be. Other shop found the problem and said it was very suspect. Really disappointed.
