So I finally got to taking apart intake, MAF and throttle body. The MAF looked pretty darn clean, but i sprayed it down with MAF cleaner anyway.

I cleaned out the filter box which had all sorts of crap at the bottom. Hit is with vacuum. I was trying to figure out how to take out the box to give it a better cleaning, and clean out the pre filters that go against the body, but could not figure it out. Seems like the whole assembly is a little loose, but held in place by some disposable attachments?

It took me a while to figure out how to take out throttle body. Did not realize that there was a coolant line running through it. I had gotten some hose clamp pliers for Christmas, but there was absolutely no room to use them. I needed the flexible ones that are on my list of things to buy:

My throttle body was supper dirty. Sprayed it down with TB cleaner, used a tooth brush to scrub some and wiped the rest off. Reassembled everything and tomorrow I will test for coolant leaks.

It took me much longer than I thought. All said and done, 3-4 hours. Of course I took my time cleaning things, including the exterior components.

There is nothing to reset once you do this procedure right?

Once you put these spring hose clamps back on, there is nothing to else to do? I am not used to working with these types of clamps.

Super dirty TB? You should probably consider the catch can mod.

Bump...

Drove it and no problems so far. I was getting the p0171 P0174 codes sporadically. Hopefully all is good.

The filter box has two holes that open into the body with some foam filters. I assume they are meant to filter out the bigger particles.

That's interesting. I don't have any foam material before the engine air filter. That's why I can find a leaves & things in the airbox occasionally. We've had this 02 yuk since new & don't ever remember seeing that.

The way these motors are designed they allow a small amount of oil back into the intake system, your intake gets a coating of oil on it and it allows all the dirty to stick to it causing that dirty throttle body you had. A catch can catches the oil before it can get into your intake system. You just empty the catch can every now and them and your intake will stay a lot cleaner. Also that coolant line that flows in and out of your throttle body can be deleted. You basically just bypass the throttle body, its pretty straight forward, you'll keep your IATs lower and make it easier on yourself next time you decide to pull the TB out. Unless your are regularly driving in extreme cold you don't need coolant pumped through the throttle body, even then there really isn't a need for that.

I cleaned mine last week and couldn't be happier with the results! Gone is the irrattic idle I was experiencing on warm starts.

There are some small drainage holes on bottom so I am sure you get some bigger grit coming through there but it must be minimal.

I did not know about the 'catch can'. Any pictures of this? Interesting.

It was a PITA to remove the coolant lines. However, if they are there, might as well keep them there. So I thought they were for cooling the TB, but I guess that was a pretty dumb guess as the air has to be warmer than the intake air.
