sounds like U joints to me. One day mine went from quiet to crunchy with a squeal. This is what they looked like that night:

Yep, mine were the same way when I changed em. Big possibility that its the u-joints, and they're cheap and easy to fix.

OK...guess I'll be changing the u-joints this weekend.
Can I search and find a write up on how to do this?

I'm sure google will turn up something, its a pretty general job. Once you get under there, it isn't too hard to figure out.

My '99 Yukon is doing the same. Thought it was the rear brakes, and possible wheel cylinder, so started doing the rear brakes, and found that both rear wheel cylinders were leaking, and replaced them as well. Still have it after doing that. Next step is the U-Joints on both drive shafts, and then rear bearing and fluid change on rear axle.

if the stock U joints are in there you will need a torch and a press to get them out. go to youtube and look it up, some good videos

Hey guys....changed my rear dif fluid tonight, and will be swapping my u-joints out this weekend. No clunk switching between gears, or at a stop. Not sure if its related.
I still have a weird whining sound from the rear when I accelerate to 25 MPH or over (1000-1500 RPM). Once I lift off the gas and coast...its gone. Could this just be the fuel pump kicking in? If so...is this a sign its failing?
Thanks for ALL the help.

If sound escalates with speed it is more likely to be u joints. If constant sound sitting still maybe fuel pump.

Thanks for the help with this...it doesnt escalate with speed...its a constant whinning when I lay on the gas pedal...it doesnt get louder or change pitch either...lay off the gas...it goes away. Very weird...never hear this before in any vehicle I have had. Any input would be much appreciated.
