I've heard by adding a new Mass Air Sensor will help to tune the engine after the upgrade of a cat back exhaust and air intake, more air in more co2 out and thats when the computer will read new upgrades installed. I have a magnaflow cat back exhust and k&n air filter installed and the difference is noticeable, however i want more power on the intake and in the next few weeks I will get a k&n junior.

Any thoughts?

I would not recommend running an aftermarket MAF. This can only do harm to your vehicle.

Just curious here but how can an aftermarket MAF be harmful to a vehicle?? I have seen them on Jegs and Summit and if you read in the details they say they are not calibrated for CAIs.

let me preface my comment by mentioning that I am not a mechanic or gearhead. I do read a lot of these forums for every different vehicle I own though and try to learn. having said that, of all of the components that you want to just keep OEM and working properly, it's probably the MAF. That and sparkplugs are just not worth messing with. If your MAF isn't working properly, it can easily cause your vehicle to run lean, or IMO worse, very rich. Running rich will cause excess gas to be dumped into the engine. This will not all be "used" and will end up in your cats, destroying them in short order. Things can spiral out of control from there. I'm honestly not sure what the repercussions are from running too lean, but my guess is that it would have the same effect as running rich somewhere else in the engine but this time due to not enough fuel.

As for Jegs and Summit, I've read many times that Jegs at least has a lot of parts inside that are "snake oil". They do nothing but could possibly harm your vehicle. Again, all just my opinion.

Here is a post I made a while ago addressing this question:

I will also tell you, that some of the major brand name aftermarket MAFs, are simply junk yard MAFs that they punch sensors out of and slap stickers on.

Keep in mind, JEGS and Summit also still sell Tornado fuel mixers, throttle body spacers, fuel line magnets etc. If people will buy it, why not have it on the shelves?! :imo:

In the 4.6 world, some folks do run quality oversized MAFs, but they also run a tune that reflects the change.

My gut feeling is that an oversized MAF is not necessary with the 5.3, except perhaps in cases of radical mods, like forced induction. If one does choose to run an oversized MAF, they would be well-advised to check with a reputable tuner first to see if in fact a modified tune is necessary.

Aftermarket and oversized could be seen differently. You can run an oversized OEM MAF.

The stock MAF is good for upwards of 550HP. 99% of the people running these vehicles, will never see close to that number. For those that do, and need more tuning on their system, speed density should be the way to go.

Ok you guys cleared out my doubts, so then after CAI and exhaust, where should i send my truck to be tune or what should i buy as a tuner device or something? I dont want to change from 89 to 93 octane because of a chip or something.

Thanks
