Mmm ... Sounds like it only ticks under load? Like when exhaust pressure is up? Yeah, I would triple check your exhaust before diving in under the valve covers. That would be much easier to deal with for sure. Check your catalytic converters as well that they're not rattling.

best way I've found to find exhaust leaks is a mechanic stethoscope but with the end removed so you have a open tube. like this..

run the open end around all the joints and the manifold to head. you will hear the puff puff very easily. if you don't here it with this, it's sealed solid. the rubber is silicone as well, so it doesn't melt.

.... And did you use the correct gasket at the exhaust manifold flange to the downpipe? Some applications are odd.... Our 2014 Escalade uses the thick donut on the driver side, and a thin gasket on the passenger side.... Or maybe I have it vice versa.

If it's ticking you either have too short of pushrods or your bleeding oil pressure by whatever scheme you used to block the towers (I use the drive in plugs & the valley cover that's designed to block them as well)

Lifter soak isn't the issue, it's not needed on any roller lifter with a non adjustable rocker arm system; but pushrod length is critical

All lifter types & manufactures do not use the same cup depth and all head gaskets are not the same thickness
