If either of you need any advice on either, let me know, I've done inner and outer door handles. One thing I would recommend is using only a gm door handle. Reason is because aftermarket ones don't seem to have the just the right fitament.

Thanks PH99,
I'm going to look into some OE handles. Do you happen to have a part #?

Thanks

i replaced my drivers door handle with one from 1AAuto.com and it fit fine... well the handle did, i had to reuse the original gasket as the new one was too "small" and wouldn't sit right... but it looks factory to me... only took me about an hour plus i greased up all the window and locking mechanisms...

Right side outer handle 15742230
Left side outer handle 15742229

Inside handle #s depend on the trim color.

Also it's not only fitament but the texture of the outer handles and the quality of the casting.

Great info guys. My handles on my '97 yukon are fine, but my key don't fit the doors or tail gate and I'll be looking at pulling the handles and replacing the locks. These rigs did have the same key for the ignition and doors didn't they? I'm guessing someone replaced the ignition and didn't hang on to the old key for the doors. I'm going to check out the local wrecking yards first for the parts, unless someone knows if they are cheap to buy new.

I've replaced inner and outer driver side handles on my rig... would suggest GM for the outer for sure, but the inner doesn't have to be GM for proper fitment/quality/texture - both inners are plastic with pot-metal handles. You'll need to have a screw for the inner - replacing the factory rivet that locks the part in place.

You don't have to pull the handles to replace the lock cylinders. You just have to remove the inside door panel and the door module. The cylinders are held into the handles by a metal push tab. If you visit a GM dealer parts dept. and give them your VIN they should be able to get you lock cylinders that will match the your factory key.

Thank you for the info! I'll ask the dealer about them.

If the ignition has been changed the VIN will give you the same lock cylindars that are already on the truck. IIRC the local lock smith can rekey ignitions to a differnt key.

Just a update.
I replaced my lock cylinders with new ones from a local part store, $43 for two cylinders w/two keys. I had to take off the door panels, and loosen up the outer door handles. I wasn't sure how to remove the door module, so I just loosened the door module so I could get my arm in behind it. It took me 4 hours to do both sides (I have very large hands) but the only rod I had to take off was the one on the lock cylinders.

If anyone knows how to take the door modules off (I wasn't sure the best way to remove rods/and window arms) I'm sure it would be very useful info for the next guy that needs to do these kind of projects.
