Guys it's been awhile since I have done some mods because I am still working on my retro.... :sorrysign: Anyways I bought an E-Prance dash cam and installed it tonight. It was exactly what I was looking for and not that bad of a price. I had witnessed a few things recently that I wish I had caught on camera so I went for it. I also purchased a fuse tap to usb mini power harness, at $40 it seems expensive but I'm OCD and it makes the install very easy and clean. Anyways onto the install.

Here's the camera:

First thing, setup the wiring to make sure everything works.

I used the driver side fuse box:

Find a hot start only fuse, there is only one in this fuse box and its a 2 amp fuse. Got lucky cause the camera only needs 2 amps however the fuse tap can use any amperage.

Then setup your ground, plenty near by:

Now stop and test the camera. Everything worked fine hot start only charging and stops charging once the key is off and driver door is opened. Exact setup I wanted.

Next run the wires, really easy to do:

Remove the A Pillar cover

Pull back headliner and tuck, it's not coming out if you pull the headliner back far enough, but be careful

Mount the camera in a location that you can't see it from the driver seat so it won't distract you. Also where it's not obvious it may seem that its quite visible but because of the tinted windsheild up top and oem sun shading in the middle this is the only location I could mount it. I think it blends in well.

Now run and test the camera, based off my settings it auto records 3 min videos once it receives power aka the reason for the hot start fuse. It will record up to 32gb and then will overwrite and delete the oldest file and so on.

Then clean up the wiring and close up the fuse panel:

Let me know what you guys think. Overall I spent about $150 but it could save me much more if I ever needed it in the future or it could help someone else.

EDIT:

Here is some footage of it installed

Seems simple enough, I have been thinking about something like this for my burban, just haven't researched much about any cameras as of yet.

Interesting

Which # fuse did you use again?

Also, how is the video quality?

Upload one to youtube :)

How does this compare to the new garmin camera devices?

There are alot of options. I just wanted good quality and high memory capability. I don't need any fancy features or bells and whistles. This camera does that and it happens to have a gps tracker, so I can't complain. There's lots of reviews on it.

I'll go check again here in a minute. It was the top right 2 amp fuse.

Video quality is good. I'll upload one tomorrow, while I'm "driving like an idiot"

The garmin look nice but this does all the features needed for a dash cam, those garmins are a waste of money and way too big and not very covert. The whole intent was to have a dash cam without it being known I have one. The screen doesn't even come on unless I want it to. This also has a really nice mounting setup, just watch that vid I posted.

Fantastic!
I was looking at this exact thing about a month ago.
It will save your butt come time you ever get into an accident. I have also heard that some insurance companies will give you a discounted rated.
This looked a lot easier than i had imagined, and a lot cheaper.
