Resonator has nothing to do with emissions so CA should not care if you cut it off. Not all vehicles have resonators...

The size of the muffler largely determine the volume of sound that is produced by the muffler. The bigger the more mellow the sound. Here in a couple of days I, too, will be ordering the 22" magnaflow based on what Felix has said. Haven't decided what to do about tips yet. I want it to be a little different. May just go with something hidden.

Update

Hi guys,

I have been speaking to a lot of muffler shops. Local shop was going to charge me $400 for the 22" magnaflow muffler, resonator delete, and dual tip (3 1/2 inch stainless steel tips) with a rear exit. Having dual tips raised the cost from $280 to $400 because of the extra piping.

Called another shop out of the area will do for $220 cash out the door!

Another question, I considered not taking the resonator out and a single exit pipe with dual tips. How much will the resonator affect the muffler sound?

Ok...the muffler itself costs $100 off Amazon, the SLP tip for the resonator delete is $116 shipped. You can easily install the tip yourself. My muffler shop charged me $40 for the welding up of the muffler. Extra pipe needed to be run for it to work otherwise you could do this yourself as well. All told you're out about $250. That first shop was taking you for a ride!!

Finally did it...

Hey guys,

I finally bought the exhaust. I took it to a guy who would do it for $240 out the door. He was pretty good. Said in his 18 years of muffler experience, this is the only the second time someone has order a 22 in magnaflow. The left tip seems slightly higher. Bugs me, but going to try and see if it bugs me enough to go through the trouble of fixing it.

Love the sound, especially a cold start up. No drone and can barely tell until I hit the gas. Exactly what I was looking for the amount of money I wanted to spend. I would have loved a corsa, but even looking at the current set up, would have love to have another set of duals running out the driver rear. Oh well, if only money wasn't an issue.

Here are some pics. I will try post a couple of sound clips. Thanks for all the advice. It was greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I really liked his set up and he sent me some soundclips that sealed the decision to get the magnaflow. I like his tips better than mine, but I am happy with the ones that I got. I tried recording the start up a couple times, but the sound is bad on my cameras. Will post soon.

Hi Felix,

Cutting off the resonator, is that illegal? Similar to removing the cat converter? I live in CA, so I was just wondering what I am getting into. I was looking at Borla, but it did not seem to be that much more than a magnaflow. I don't know if I am just looking at the wrong mufflers. I spoke to a muffler shop and they recommended the largest muffler for the sound that I wanted. He said the 22 inch magnaflow, which I believe is the size that you have. The largest Borla I saw was 19 inches. How does the size effect the sounds.

This is a quote from a chevroletforum.com forum user that lives in CA:

"It's perfectly legal to remove a resonator tip in the state of Calif. You just can't remove the mufflers or catalytic converters. Anything after the mufflers is fair game."

It sounds pretty legitimate... maybe someone in CA that's a cop can shine some light on the situation. When I was getting my magnaflow muffler put on, I turned my car on with the muffler pulled (essentially straight pipes) and it sounded SICK but extremely loud. The muffler I got is the one comparable to size of the stock muffler because I did not want them to add extra piping. Like I said in my above posts, the large the size (of the muffler), the less sound there will be. A 14" muffler will be WAY louder then the 22". Also yes the borla is not THAT much more but it IS more... you def cannot get a Borla for $100 like I got my Magnaflow muffler for... I just had so many other mods I wanted to do so I wanted to spend minimal money but get a quality muffler... hence the Magnaflow. Hope that helps bro good luck.
