Did they give any warnings, before or during the work, that they could not get to the rear broken studs and if they were replacing them the price would be higher because of removing heads?

no, they said if they're able to get it to seal they dont take it any further. i've seen where dorman makes a clamp for some 5.3 heads but not all if theres 2 spare holes on back of head to mount it to.
