Yes, almost all engine blocks, heads and transmission housings are cast, and then machined. Manufacturers do this to save time and material. Just think how long it would take to machine an engine block out of a billet piece of steel or aluminum. Not to say it isn't done, but it's usually race car parts that are done from billet steel or alum.Aren't some heads and blocks cast iron? They get machined.
