I have flow aster muffler now. Guessing bolting this in didn't change much? What are the benefits of a cat back vs just bolting muffler in? Does the cat back use a larger diameter pipe? Basically I want to know,

1. Will I benefit from piecing together my own cat back and
2. What do I need to do

Thanks for y'all's time!

Generally speaking ....... all exhausts provide zero to little performance benefits.

Do it for the sound........

Yeah that's why I did it but just ordered airside jr and am doing a tune soon so didn't know if I would benefit from going to a three inch pipe from the cat back to the muffler

As mentioned above...it wont make a huge difference. I do believe flowmaster is a great sounding muffler but not great performance wise. I personally prefer straight thru design over chambered.

Flow masters don't affect the sound they just quiet it down which is why I don't like them.
Flow masters to me just sound like quieter straight pipes.
Magnaflow for life.

I'm about to find out if that's true. I put a Magnalow cat-back on my 05 for some volume but I'm also hoping to gain a little mpg in efficieny. Every vehicle I've owned gained from an exhaust or muffler swap. I would think our trucks would still fit that observation. I'm not looking for power most of the time, only better sound and the side benefit of better fuel economy from removing a very restrictive stock exhaust.

My 03 STS gained 1mpg on my work commute with a Corsa system.
My 05 STS-V gained between 1.5 and 2mpg on my work commute with the Gibson system.

The stock mufflers are heavy on these vehicles, I'm thinking are pretty restrictive to make them as quiet as they are. I know on my 03 STS the reason I changed the system was the stock exhaust was so quiet you couldn't hear it behind the vehicle at idle, you actually heard the fuel pump instead, it drove me nuts.
