Oh my bad :( didn't mean to give false info. But the sending unit wouldn't cause the gauge to read empty would it? I feel like a ******* lol

No, I think you're right, the sending unit does indicate fuel level, but wouldn't affect the fuel pressure.

As it was already said, the float failed. You need to replace the fuel pump because it's all one unit. Since your truck runs still I'd trying getting the tank as empty as possible and go to replace the pump. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the hardest, I'd say it's about a 4 if you have the right tools.

Calculate your mileage and do some driving, then let the thing idle until it runs out of gas or way down. If it were me, I would park it where I was doing the work and let it run til it dies, I have done a couple tanks with fuel still in them and it is not fun.

And even if it is your gauge cluster that ends up being the problem you know you have the fuel pump/sending unit done, as these things are also notorious for failing. A bad fuel pump will leave you stranded, a bad gauge is an inconvenience if you make sure you keep gas in it.

here is something cheap you can try while your burning the fuel out. I've used this on my camaro when the gauge got stuck after a track pass... seemed to fix the problem. One bottle of the concentrate and 1/2 bottle of mystery oil. It might not fix your problem but for less then $20 it can buy you some time until you can fix it. I've used it in my suburban and it helped a bit but didn't completely fix the gauge.

Sorry but I didn't read through this thread but have you tried tapping/smacking your cluster to see if it starts to work again? Not saying this is the solution for most things but my gas gauge died a few days ago after installing a battery (probably just coincidence about the battery), so I decided to tap on the cluster with my knuckles and it started working again (so far). Don't hit it hard enough to break anything but give it some taps and even smack on the dash a bit to see if it starts to work again, might be a haywire connection!! If it doesn't work, at least you will let out some frustration in the process!! lol :)

yeah my last yukon a 96, i had to put 7 fuel pumps on it over a 10 year period. One of the pumps I put on (ac Delco) had a sending unit go bad after 2 weeks. I just lived with it cause I replaced the pump myself and was not about to go through pulling that tank again. If you can afford it I would replace pump and all while you have it out. The best pump/sending unit I found was a bosch from advance. It cost more but was well worth it. It replaced the factory wiring harness plug and I had no more problems. Oh and 2 of those 7 pumps was AC Delco, the first one died 2 weeks after I put it in. The second on lasted about a year and a half but the sending unit for the fuel level went after a few weeks

BOSCH vs. AC Delco. Got to love the good ole GERMAN stuff. ;)
