SOLVED. Pump installed and tank back up in place. Wow, much easier dropping the damn thing. Fuel gauge/quantity working perfectly. Filled up. Correct "full" reading then drove for about 50 miles. No issues what so ever. Remained steady with no fluctuations. Didn't mention this in my comments when I replaced the fuel pump almost 2 years ago - but I was having no luck with getting the lock ring off with a screwdriver/punch and hammer - so I purchased a tool. Made removal and install pretty easy.

I didn't need a tool for mine, either time -- we used two channel lock pliers on opposing sides to move the ring. It obviously helps to have two people when doing it.

Mine was a bastard.

Bought it off amazon about two years ago. When I get a chance, I'll look it up. But I believe around $30 or so. My dad always said or words to the affect - A job is only as easy as the tool you have to complete the job. Something like that....

One of the reasons I have so many odd tools. Need a filing system to identify and find them afterwards.

For others who have problems with the fuel guage readings, I am having somewhat similar issues on my 2003 Tahoe. Have not found the final problem yet but in the process of the investigation I pulled apart the electrical connector under the engine compartment fuse panel that includes the purple and black wires from the fuel tank sending unit. When I put it back together the level reading on the fuel guage went up from below half a tank to above half a tank. The connector has aluminum prongs and I think that pulling the connector apart and then reconnecting maybe scraped off some oxidation from the prongs and reduced the resistance, increasing the apparent fuel level in the tank. This is similar to what I have found with a few fuses in the past that looked fine but weren't passing electricity. One was fixed by removing and installing it. With another I replaced it even thought it looked fine. Aluminum oxide has high resistance. That is why on the main wire connections in house breaker panels they are supposed to put anti-oxidant on the aluminum wire connections so it won't cause a fire from the heat buildup due to aluminum oxide.
