Hey all,
I'm on this forum a lot, so why not ask you guys since this is one thing I can't find on the Internet. I have a 1998 GMC Yukon, and I randomly once in a while (mostly in the city) I'll be driving and I smell a horrible strong gas smell in the cab. I think it might be the AC, because it's usually only when I drive behind someone. But I want to ask you guys to make sure it's not a exhaust leak, pin hole in the lines, etc. btw, my ac controller is kind of messed up as it is, the lights don't work in recycle air button, or A/C button. So I don't know if the recycle air went out, and it's just coming out of the vent and I'm just smelling the car in front of me, or what. Anyways, thanks guys!

Sounds like some more controlled testing is required

check your gas lines for leaks. Does it only do this when the tank is 3/4 - full??? Turns?

I had a lingering smell for months. turned out to be the gas line right at the tank was rotting. only with a full - 3/4 tank did I smell it, and it was very subtle. Then a while later another part of the line got a pin-hole leak and that's when the smell got bad! When they pulled the line out, it broke at the tank. they said it's been leaking for months at the tank and was amazing I didn't smell it, which I didn't. Ended up replacing the entire line from tank to filter with a braided line. The only issue was that the tank had to be dropped which upped the $$$ for the repair. If your lines have never been replaced, for the age of your truck I would suggest it before you run into a problem.

Going through this now.

The points on the gas tank the fuel pump lock ring lock into were smoked on my tank........ I only had the smell at or with a full/near full tank of gas.

So its a now a tank replacement, new lock ring and new fuel pump assembly
