Sorry, but I'm completely ignorant to the way the 4x4 system works. This is my first 4 wheel drive. I grew up under the hoods of old sports cars mostly.
Yes that would be a 2 speed transfer. In light 4x4 driving high is just fine when things get real rough, steep or slick 4 low will often work better. In low you will have more torque available and it will crawl better over rough obstacles or allow slower up or down hill travel.
For clarification with the 488 gears it was shifting into 6th gear in 2 high range in city driving. At 10 mph it would be in 3rd gear... 65 mph was over 3200 rpm. Very impractical gearing for street use with 35's
