My 07 5.3 has 220k on it. Stock engine and stock trans - stock drivetrain for that matter -, two tune ups and oil changes are all I've done to it. Mine uses no oil.

My HHR has 185k and my S10 with the 4.3 has 400k.

Nobody in the industry builds engines and drivetrains like GM...PERIOD.

I had to quote this because this has got to be the FIRST person to ever state that his 5.3 (regardless of mileage) uses NO oil whatsoever. Hang on to that for dear life because you may have the unicorn of GM 5.3's!!!

If it makes you'all feel any better my '07 Town and Country started eating a qt every 1K-1.2K miles at 60K miles....Still going strong @ 112K and using the same amount of oil.....

Chryslers answer: Normal oil consumption.

I have recently purchased an '07 Tahoe with 116K miles on it. I will be watching the oil consumption.

On a side note, I did plugs and wires and noticed #1 plug looked a little oil fouled compared the the other 7.......

HMMMMMMMMM.

My '07 PPV was run fairly hard as a Highway Patrol vehicle, of that I have no doubt. I know they ran E85 with a strong tune, and I suspect they tuned out the stinking, communist AFM. I bought it with just under 135K. Haven't had it for long, but I would estimate the oil consumption at about one quart per 5000 miles. For a 5.3, I can live with that. I have also had it tuned for 93 octane, and the stinking, communist AFM disabled.

Me personally, I would love to see those responsible for AFM horsewhipped, tarred and feathered, and ridden out of town on a rail. GM reps on the board, are you listening? And please don't respond with the usual words 'I'm sorry'.

Question...

Question for those of you who've had this happen to their engines.

Would you mind chiming in with what type of oil your 5.3 had been using before this problem? I realize the issue is with the 4-cylinder mode, but I'm curious if any specific oil is better/worse for the situation.

Quick update........
After dealing with GM and the dealer, and repeating the story over and over to different GM people on the phone, including supervisors....The dealer wanted me to spend about 3 Grand so they can "INSPECT" the truck, they were going to take the heads of and inspect the cylinders, not fix it, "INSPECT", with no guarantee that GM was going to cover me on this. GM would not give me a response to what they were going to do, until that was done. In other words, if the dealer though it was my fault, I'm out 3 Grand. The dealer wanted almost 7 Grand to re-build the engine, or $6500 to drop crate an engine. Wow. Finally after pushing to talk to a supervisor on GM's side, and pushing to give me a resolution to what they were going to do. The supervisor made me repeat the story over again, once I finished telling him my story. He quickly told me, that GM wasn't going to do anything. Plain and simple. Nothing was being covered, I was pissed, I told the GM Sup. that why did he ask me to repeat the story when he knew that GM had said they weren't covering me. He said it was to record my conversation with him.....Perfect, what an a..hole. So I sued GM, and guess what! "I WON"!!!!!! Screw me, hell NO, Screw you GM.....My engine is getting rebuilt, and I have money to take a vacation. Thanks GM....All you had to do was take care of your ex-loyal customers, and it cost you double what you would of paid to have it fixed....So Thank you. BB performance in San Diego here I come to turn off that damn AFM, and maybe I'll get another 100k out of this truck...Thanks
