If I was a betting man I would bet that wire goes to your starter which is why I will not start with the key. I would look at the back of your starter and the rest of that wire terminal should be under a nut where it is broke off. Replace the end then I'll bet you're good to go
Wish I knew you I would have made some money doesn't go there

Comes out of a bundle of wires next to the grinding strap by the top left transmission bell housing mount bolt

Can you check that wire to ground and see if it has 12 V? If it doesnt, check it between the positive side of battery to that wire. If it then shows 12V we know its a ground. Seems like you said it was blowing fuses when it was touching ground so i suspect it would have 12V.
