pick this up at a local auto parts store or? And what should I do about prepping the grille for paint? anything? I have tomorrow off and I would really like to tackle this.

all can be found at an autozone, kragen, napa, walmart, etc.
to prep the grill use road and tar remover
I painted my grille with adhesion promotor, etching primer, regular automotive primer and my body color mixed in a spray can with clear coat and this is how it turned out

So you didnt sand or anything? I'm planning on doing my rear bumper as well, the only chrome I have on the truck is the grille, rear bumper, and front bumper. Not sure what I should do about the front bumper. Looks like im tackling this tomorrow! You think its ok to paint in like 60 degree weather?

I'm in the same boat bro!
and looks like we have the same body color!
I'm halfway through my front bumper
it turned out like shit in the beginning because I didn't use the right primer and I layed it on too thick

but the grill was pretty easy.. I took a disc sander and used 600 grit to rough up the chrome but make the surface smooth if you get what I mean.. then prepped the surface with the road and tar remover

waited for that to evaporate.. cleaned it with a paper towel.. then hit it with the air compressor

bull dog adhesion promotor.. about 2 coats
that stuff is really tricky to work with because it goes on clear so you don't know if you have put too much in one spot or not enough so be careful

then spray the self etching primer down

a good trick I've learned with primers.. get a different color
so for self etching I think they have either green, brown or black
do a light coat then 2 more heavier coats

then use automotive primer and in this case it should be black so you know how heavy a coat you have put on

once that is completely dry sand it with 1000 grit or higher

and then shoot your body color

I always have my body color mixed with clear so I can skip a step and not have to worry about clear coat compatibility issues

then rubbing compound and it should look great!

and honestly some may say otherwise but I was painting in 50º weather the other day and didn't notice a difference
just make sure before you paint to let your cans soak in warm water so they flow easier and do it in a garage

drying time seems to be the factor in colder weather so thats all you need to watch out for

I think the technical name for mine is dark spiral gray
paint code U805k

Kasey has it down. I wouldnt paint in colder weather but thats just because im to impatient.

Yea try not to paint in the cold if you can help it.. if you have to use thinner coats and make sure to take a lil longer between coats..

yea they make 3 kindsa aerosol clear to my knowledge.. high gloss,semi gloss and matte... then varying colors and textures of each..

But yea.. like a good matte paint job on a car.. is actually painted regular ass black (for instance) the same black as you would on a high gloss or kandy car.. then after its done they spray a matte clear over it.


600 is a good number.. btw.. you can even do 800 or a grand if youre gonna hand sand it.. to minimize groving
