Has GMC Denali Name become too common?

I think the Denali is very exclusive and not as common as one might think.

I read that the average US household income is about $130,000 for Tahoe/Entry level and up to about $180,000 for Denali buyers. We make more than both and I still can't fathom the idea of dropping that much on a rapidly depreciating car. Even at my 4Runner limited price point I'm feeling borderline about it. We need to gross $100,000+ just to pay the mortgage, daycare, and save for retirement/investment. Haven't even got into discretionary spending like gas, groceries, trips, phones etc. Life is too expensive and I would feel too guilty about buying a Denali. I'd rather spend that extra money on a trip or other experience.

Not really sure how what you make directly correlates to what vehicle you can afford. In a way I agree but you also have to factor in what you cost of living is in your area, if the median house is $200,000 vs $800,000 then you do not have to have $100,000 (using the example above) just cover mortgage, daycare, and retirement.

Pretty sure the 20% rule applies to a payment not the complete cost of the vehicle.

Good Points and comments raised, although the left turn into the financial side was not expected. The Denali Trim has been morphing into a Brand for GM, if you ask someone who drives a Yukon or a Sierra, they with a minority of exceptions tell you they drive a 'Denali' and if as you know, when you look on the side of the vehicle it only says 'Denali' and only on the rear does the full name come on. Strange as it may seem, even Cadillac Esc owners have referred to their own as 'Denalis' Not many granted but confusing. Dodge has done the same with their Journey, with people calling it a Crossroad rather than Journey . Older people on the board will remember that Camaro owners referred to their line option ticket as Z28 and GM made a meal of that. While I find it bizarre, some in the Auto world have suggested that GM may spin off the Denali brand onto its own. I cant see it since they divested Olds and Pontiac, but they are watching FC closely since they are Separating the RAM truck.

I would slightly agree that the Denali name got tarnished when they slapped it on the Envoy years ago. I can’t really speak for the smaller SUV with the Denali name but the trim level is definitely way better vs the SLE and SLT. And the 6.2 crushes the the other offerings. I remember when I bought my first Yukon Denali, people would just call it a Denali. Now you can buy a terrain and say you drive a Denali. In my opinion, it’s not the same.

I remember when Silverado was a trim level.

Chevy made the Custom , Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne , and Silverado. Now all full size Chevy trucks are called a Silverado.

Also remember when Tahoe was a trim level on the S-10 truck and Blazer. Now it is it's own model

Suburban was a GMC or Chevrolet

GMC pickups were either a Sierra or High Sierra as I recall.

Denali is a trim level designation nothing else.

Chevy Uses the LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels on the truck and Impalas and Malibu and I think on the Cruz.

If GM thinks that they can sell more by adding an emblem with a recognized name they will do it in a heartbeat to sell some more units.


Ok here's another flip flop for you. Remember Back in the 60's you had the Impala and then in 66 they came out with the Caprice, Nicer trim and more goodies and a bigger price. Cop cars were Impala's. now a Cop car is a Caprice and an Impala Is a overpriced nice car.


I know I'm showing my age but I am educating those that were born after 1975. LOL

That’s bizarre. I cannot imagine saying that. That’s like driving a Tahoe and telling someone “I drive an LT!” Lol. Responding to the question “what car do you drive?” with a trim level is not something I’ve ever heard.

Not tryin to really get into this thread but I will say this, everybody I run into says the same thing, calls the yukon a denali, but never thinks my truck is.

Crazy. I’ve never heard anyone say they drove a [insert trim level]. Maybe a regional difference or something. Where I am people respond with their model not trim. Do people that own a terrain with Denali trim answer the question with ‘Denali’ too or just yukon owners?
