Hey Guys,

My Buddy just gave me his Viper 791XVthat he pulled out of his last car. I'm hoping to find a DIY thread on the install. Has anyone done this one before? Do you have a write up with pics?

Thanks!!

I have this remote start on my truck - I will say make sure its installed properly - can sure cause some damage to the starter and other electronics if its not. I'd just pay someone to have it installed professionally.

I believe you!.......and I am in fact a certified installer myself. I'm just aware of the risks you speak of, which is why I'm looking for someone who has already done it. Hopefully I can get some tips and a write up.

Thanks for your quick respose!

Sorry I dont have install info for you - I just warned you from a bad previous experience I had with a viper remote start installed on one of my Grand Cherokee's.

LONG story short.. the thing was "professionally" installed at a stereo shop...

Go out to my car and it turns out the truck was CRANKING for 35 minutes...
Had to have entire alarm replaced... Engine flywheel, Starter, and misc stuff. It was a MESS

The installer used those damn Scotch locks under the dash, and mis-wired one of the modules that "talks" to the factory alarm and locks...

DEI even got involved and I got everything paid for but just a few stupid mistakes cost thousands of $$$

Sorry I don't have any specific info on the install - but I can say I have the full 1 mile range version of this and its a great system!!

If you've never installed an alarm or rs system before, then have it professionally installed by a competent and reputable shop, or at least have an experienced fellow installer help guide you through the install. I've been installing for almost 20 yrs and have seen way too many bad installs go very wrong by DIY'ers and inexperienced "certified installers". I've seen a dash catch fire, thousand dollar pcm/bcm repairs and replacements, etc.
If you decide to tackle this yourself, make sure you have as much wiring info as possible and most importantly verify the info with a dmm. Wiring guides are not always correct, whether it's from DEI, Audiovox, Scosche, etc. And depending on your year vehicle, you may or may not need an interface for the locks and PLII/III system.
The best way to splice wires is solder and heat shrink. Crimp style connectors, especially Scotchlocks and t-taps are very unreliable, especially in an environment with constant vibration such as a vehicle. Not only can they come loose, but they also hinder performance because they cause more resistance to current flow, especially in higher drawing circuits associated with RS systems.
The 791xv is nice and is the same model I have in my truck. If you have heated seats, you can connect a channel to the seats. I have my aux channels wired to turn on my heated seats, rear window and mirror defrost, window roll up/dn, and headlight activation.
Feel free to PM me if you install the system yourself and have any questions.

Thanks for the heads up! Sorry to hear.

You and I are on the exact same page. I have installed full feature Vipers successfully, but I'm a Computer Systems Engineer, not a Car Stereo Installer. I only got my MECP for fun. My Dad was a mechanic for 30 years before he died, and I've always been into cars & car audio. I am 100% capable of doing this myself, but I have really high standards when it comes to stuff like this. I'd rather pay someone else to do it. The only problem I have with that, is that every time I pay someone else to do something to my shit, they do a worse job than I could do. I don't do "half-ass", but many others seem to. I also don't trust myself to do it without some sort of write up w/pics. I won't touch something like this w/o all the details first, which is why I was hoping someone had made a DIY about it already.

If I can get the info I need, and decide to do it myself, I'll do the write up on it for everybody else. I'm just not ready to commit yet. Not w/o complete instruction. I might call Viper and have them walk me through it.

You wouldn't happen to have a write up w/pics, would you?

Thanks for the offer to help BTW! Much appreciation for that.

That's a good question! It doesn't really matter much to me how different they are. All I'm looking for are discriptions of where each GM wire is, and what the corresponding factory wire colors are. I can figure out the rest.

Thanks for the bump too!

I have alldata with wiring diagrams and pinouts. If you tell me what year and engine you have I can see if they have all of the diagrams you need. Might help if you list all components need such as bcm, pcm, dlc, and such. Just let me know.
