I just read some where I shouldn't have disturbed all the sludge and used kerosene to clean it all up. I'm wondering if I can oil prime the engine before start up? Will spinning the oil pump drive gear affect my timing? I have it set to TDC on number one cylinder and hope to get that dirstributor back in with no issues. Thanks

Highly doubt pcv system was your issue, really sounds like an intake. If the color didn't change on the combustion leak test, safe to say the heads, and head gasket are good. Got any pics of the sludge that was in there or intake removed before cleaning?

I would put the distributor back in before turning the motor over, put it back in exactly how removed. Buy some extra oil, you'll have to change it after the intake anyways, but I like to change the oil again immediately after the first roasted, just to be sure all the coolant found its way out. It's not completely necessary, just piece of mind.

I didn't get my parts on time before leaving for work!! I went and talked to an engine rebuilder and he said my compression was too high for a stock motor. I'm not sure if this motor is stock or not as I just got it in the fall. It has an upgraded Spider injector in it though. Is there any way to test the injectors now that they are out of the truck? Can I just hook up gas them and put power to the contact and see if they all squirt?

Your sludge issue and cleaning with kerosene can be like doing a transmission fluid change on a transmission thats already slipping. Like a 50 50 shot if you made something worse. Drain the kerosene soaked oil out and refill it with 10 30 and a jug of lucas oil treatment leave the old filter in place. Assuming its going to start when your done with the other repairs, start it up and let it run about 15-30 min. Shut it back down drain the oil back out again and again use 10 30 and lucas and the filter this time. Also keep a CLOSE eye on the oil pressure the whole time if it spikes way above normal or has little to no oil pressure shut it back down immediately. If it does either of those have it rebuilt as the sludge you didnt get scooped out that went down into the engine has either plugged something or damaged something.

Yup already drained out the kerosene/sludge/oil mix. got a few jugs of oil and filters lined up. If I end up wrecking the motor the rebuilder only wants 1500 to do a full rebuild on it if I bring him the motor. Sounds good too me. I'm still wondering about the higher compression though. He said 185 is way too high for that motor. Why would it be higher unless it was rebuilt I guess.

Did you do a compression test with a gauge or scope? If gauge what brand is the gauge? I've seen cheap gauges give false readings. As drakon said, watch that oil pressure, if there's sludge made it down to the oil pump screen, just send it straight to the rebuilder.

Compression tester was new from Canadian Tire. an Equus I think. after I put it all together again I'm going to do another compression test just to see if it's the same.

Haven't heard of that brand. I personally don't like to trust cheaper specialty tools, they aren't always fully accurate.

Just to clarify, what units are the readings, I'm guessing psi?

From the factory manual :
No cylinder shall be below 100 PSI
No cylinder shall be below 70% of the highest-reading cylinder

Your highest reading-200
Lowest reading-155
Minimum (70%)-140

The compression is not to high. It's in spec.
