Hi,

I have a 2001 yukon XL. I have a back up camera I want to install but after searching I cannot figure out where to power it. I have the towing package. I would like it powered all the time. Which wires do I use on the towing kit or the rear lights? If so which exact wires do I attach them to? Any ideas?

Thanks

Jake

I tied mine into the cigarette lighter outlet in the right rear quarter panel.

One of the wires in your 7 pin plug is a costant 12 volt. Not sure which wire, but check your plug cover. You have to have the fuse in the engine bay in. Why do you want it on all the time you only use it when you back up.

I wanted it on all the time so that when im towing, etc I can check and make sure everything looked ok. I went ahead and wired it to my back up lights but would still like to switch it if possible.

I have mine the same way. Whenever I put the truck in reverse my screen automatically turns into camera mode.

You can't use any wires at the trailer plug if you want the camera on all the time that the truck is on. They are either light related (left turn, right turn, reverse, parking) or constant 12V. And you cannot use constant 12V since you camera will be on all the time thus draining your battery when your truck is off.

You will have to either run a wire to the steering column, which is where the ignition wire is, OR:

If you never plan on using the aux trailer wire (at the trailer plug), then you could go to the underhood fuse box and switch this wire over to an ignition only wire. You will have to pop off the cover of the fuse box and look for the blue wire that runs along side of it. That would be the easiest way to create an ignition wire at the rear of the vehicle.

Thanks for the replies. I just went ahead and hooked it up to the reverse light power, so it only powers up in reverse. Seems to work pretty well, and the picture quality is quite shocking for a 10 dollar camera from amazon!

Since you had to run the video cable all the way to the dash, you can also run a power wire. There are multiple place to tap power there. I recommend accessory power so you don't have to worry about battery drain. Use a three way rocker switch, then you can toggle between camera on all the time and reverse only.

Assuming its not a wireless unit, this is true.
