First off, Thanks for all the suggestions and comments regarding gear choices. In the end I went with what both the Off-Road shop and the Gear company recommended, 4.56. The gear company (Yukon Gears) took make, model, tire size & Transmission gear ratios into consideration when making their recommendation.
I figured if I went 4.88 and wasn't satisfied, I would have no one else to blame but myself, so I went with their recommendation. Performance wise I am happy. There is a world of difference between the 4.56 and 3.42 that were in it before.
It now has good take off power and good acceleration at all speeds. The rpm's for a given speed are fairly close to the rpm on my 95' that is running stock tire size and stock 3.73 gears. I bought the 99' with the 315/70R17's already on it so I don't know exactly what the rpms were with the stock tires.
One thing for sure, it is considerably more responsive than my 95' TBI. I haven't had a chance to check gas mileage yet but I will report that once I have run a couple tanks of gas through it.
One thing I did notice is with the 3.42 gears the odometer was off on the low side (indicating less miles than actually traveled) now with the 4.56 gears its off on the high side (indicating more miles than actually traveled). Before it was indicating almost .2 tenths low now it is exactly .2 tenths high. That is with the same size tires.
Its ashamed, all that money spent and this is all I've got to show for on the outside. Fortunately the performance has improved significantly.
