Help shopping for a 5.3 or 6.2 re: Oil consumption ?

Hello Everyone, nice forum you have here!

I'm shopping for a GMT920.

If the vehicle with a 5.3 or 6.2 and AFM, what's the best way to determine if it has oil consumption problem and/or premature internal wear?

If the engine is consuming oil, but not leaking, your not going to see it on a normal PPI.
And if the internal problems (lifters, rings, etc) aren't worn enough to cause rough running, smoking, or CEL, how do you know if you're getting a good engine?

Is the problem pervasive enough that you should pay to pull the plugs, inspect, borescope, and do a compression check before purchasing?

The class action lawsuits seem to name only the 5.3 engine, not 6.2 - https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-...evrolet-autos/

A GM Tech I know mentions a problem with a "too fine" oil screen behind the pressure sensor affecting both 5.3 & 6.2 engines with AFM.

Is the 6.2 more immune to AFM related problems, or just a lot less 6.2's on the road? (Has to be what, at least 10:1 or 20:1 ratio of 5.3 vs 6.2 sold in those years?)

Whats the best way to make sure you're not getting a problem engine?

Buy a new one, that's the only way to not have an out of pocket expense. I bought my 2010 used with 118,000 miles and it runs as good as a new one. You can beat yourself up worrying about stuff you read on the internet.

I hear ya.

I fully expect to go end to end a replace a long list of worn parts and PM items on any used vehicle I buy.

What I'd like to avoid it partial or total engine replacement on a $30,000 vehicle with under 100K miles after just a few years of ownership.

Did something improve after '11?

I believe they added the ACM to the 6.2 in 2010, is that right?
(Sorry in advance, but) most lawyers I've met don't know a dipstick from a camshaft, but the class action lawsuit is for

2010 through 2013 vehicles with “Generation IV 5.3 Liter V8 Vortec 5300 engines”

• Chevrolet Suburban,

Even if the lawyers don't know squat, they must have found enough participants make the suit worthwhile (i.e. line their pockets)

In the 5.3 they changed the valve covers and the oil shield . Some other things too maybe

I am confused.. why does the class action only apply to 2010-2013? The AFM issues impact 2007-2014 correct?
