Be careful to not hit any big puddles or your "custom" CAI will pull up water and kill your engine.

Not very likely, and here's why:

1. The location of the opening is in front of the tire, and appears to have a little bit of a guard built onto the front of it to keep water away.

2. This is an air "scoop", not an enclosed tube. There is probably very little actual suction down near that opening; it's designed more to catch air and redirect it up into the airbox while the truck is moving. Any water that did hit it would probably drain back down off of it before making it into the airbox.

3. Being that there probably isn't any suction, I don't think much water would stand a chance of getting pulled in; think about the path it would have to take. It would have to make it up the scoop, into the airbox, onto the filter and then through the element, into the primary tube, and into the intake manifold. Personally I don't think much water would make it past the filter, if it even made it into the airbox at all.

While there may be some risk, unless he tries to ford a river, I think he'll be ok. ;)

I had a mod something like yours on a thunderbird & never had any issues with rain or puddles. However I will tell you this if the street is flooded high enough to reach the opening. Don't drive thru it. MY bird was lowered & I tried to drive thru a small flooded street and it was over pretty dam quick. Filter was soaked & water was sucked in. I had to remove the plugs and etc.. No fun.

Yeah, hydrolock sucks. If I ever did a mod like this, I'd probably try to fab up a bracket or something that would allow the scoop to be removeable. I don't off road my rig very much but just in case I did, it would be nice to be able to remove it ahead of time just in case I ran into some water and decided to explore.

see, now that's a TRUE cold air intake, the short ones are ram air intake....i've never seen one for the trucks that go down to the front of the wheel...only on import cars have I seen those, and I think they have a bypass valve or something in case of water.
