How far should I shove it in?

I'm posting this here 'cuz it's on an '06 Sierra I'm working on and I assume it'd be the same for any GMT800 truck or SUV. It's a crew cab 4WD if that makes any difference. The trans dipstick tube was popped out of the grommet while unbolting it from the bellhousing during engine removal. Engine's back in and the tube is bolted back in place, but I can't tell if the tube is all the way in the trans pan/grommet. It looks like the end of the tube is tapered but I don't know if it should be all the way in to where the full-width part is seated in the grommet or what. Working from up top in the engine bay, I unbolted the tube's bracket from the belhousing and pushed downward on it while twisting and wiggling but it seems to be bottomed out. The hole in the bracket falls into place on the stud to be bolted down, but it's a slot with about an inch of up and down adjustment so I can't use that as a reference.

I tried to Google for pics of the tube going into the trans but couldn't find anything pertinent. Does anyone know how this should be or could someone post a pic of theirs?

FWIW, here's a pic of my '04 5.3L 4WD, shot through the wheel well. I can't get a better angle underneath.

It almost looks like the dipstick tube is dimpled, or maybe that's part of the oil pan. I don't see any tapering to the tube outside of the oil pan.

I would think there would a visible line on the tube from age and exposure to the elements versus what was inserted and not exposed to the elements, have you looked at it under some light to see if you can tell?
