How far should I shove it in?

FWIW, here's a pic of my '04 5.3L 4WD, shot through the wheel well. I can't get a better angle underneath.

It almost looks like the dipstick tube is dimpled, or maybe that's part of the oil pan. I don't see any tapering to the tube outside of the oil pan.

Thanks for your time and for the pic, but I'm questioning the transmission dipstick tube. Although, your pic does answer something else I was questioning: I wasn't sure how that shield over the starter solenoid went cuz it popped off before I had a good look at it.

I would think there would a visible line on the tube from age and exposure to the elements versus what was inserted and not exposed to the elements, have you looked at it under some light to see if you can tell?

Good point!
When I was looking at it, it was in the wee hours of this morning so I wasn't my sharpest. The whole end is a little soaked in trans fluid cuz the tube was out and next to the hole and the trans was tilted forward and leaking onto it for a couple minutes before I got a jack underneath it. I'll carefully dab it dry and look for a crud line.

Misleading? Sorry. I try to be precise to the point with my words.
Yeah, right. Obviously you knew most of us would read the title and think you were talking about putting your foot in a sock while not stretching said sock to the point of compromising the stitching. Then you come out with this transmission dipstick question. Like anyone knows what hell a transmission dipstick is.

The trans dipstick tube was popped out of the grommet while unbolting it from the bellhousing during engine removal. Engine's back in and the tube is bolted back in place, but I can't tell if the tube is all the way in the trans pan/grommet.

I tried to Google for pics of the tube going into the trans but couldn't find anything pertinent.

Geez, why didn't you mention it was the transmission dipstick tube? LOL

Here's what mine looks like, but it seems to have that "stop" in the tube. I know, it needs a good cleaning.

Thanks for the pics! Yeah, it's very different than what I'm looking at. I decided since I couldn't move it side-to-side that it must be all the way in and tight. Maybe they changed the design to make installation more fool- and leak-proof?

Until it stops. Rember to stick your finger in the rear too, don't be surprised if it smell like rotten eggs. Be careful pulling dipsticks though, you don't want to blow a tranny.

LOL!

All sorts of innuendo there... I remember the first time I told my son's girlfriend that I "got a new tranny" and she just about flipped.
