Audio equipment isn't really my specialty, so I'm looking for recommendations for a head unit for my wife's '05 Tahoe.

When we bought it, it already had an upgraded system in it:
  • Polk Audio component speakers
  • Hifonics Zeus 5-channel amp (something like 1000W combined)
  • Touchscreen, double-din head unit. Alpine I think.
  • It has an interface adapter, PAC IIRC and OnStar seems to work.
It appeared to be professionally installed, and then some hack got to it and modified some things (to add a pair of subs and amps that were later removed when they sold it to the dealer, not sure what else) .

All the recommended HUs here seem to be touchscreens and she despises the touchscreen vehemently. I need something that is relatively easy to use, plays CDs and has an AUX jack and USB port. Other than that, reliable and reasonably priced.

Any suggestions?

Dash kit would give you a little cubby hole for single din...

As far as double - i love my NEX-8000... the whole NEX series is definitely something to look at. Just depends on your price range.

His wife doesn't want touch screen. Kenwood and pioneer both make a standard headunit in double din chassis. The only problem is they are usually more expensive than a equally equipped single din. Really I would go to a audio store and play around with a bunch of them and see what you like.

Yeah, I think I will do just this.

I've never messed with the interface adapters that are needed to integrate with the OnStar system/chimes. Since the stereo has to be wired through that, does that make the number of pre-amp outputs irrelevant?

Double din cd players are hideous! Stick with single din if you just want CD/AUX. Ive got a pioneer in mine and its great, but I'd prefer JVC. KD-HDR70 if you wanna be specific :)

Most of them are rather awful....

But we found one we like, the Kenwood DPX500BT:

A lot of new stereos seem to go for the gaudiest appearance they can come up with. This one seem a little more grown-up and mature and was pretty easy to use and had all the features she wanted.

I'll get it ordered up as soon as we get back in town.

Awesome. Yeah with headunits I always tell people to demo them before they buy. You may like the looks, but the interface and controls may suck.
