I didn't know GM put a governor on this truck ?

I was out a little while ago and had to hit the gas in an emergency, and revved the engine up and once it got to 4000 rpm, it stopped. It won't rev past 4000 RPM even though the tachometer goes to 6000 ? When did they start putting rev limiters on the trucks ?

They’ve always had rev limiters and speed governors. My 2006 had it in the factory tune. When I had blackbear performance tune my truck he deleted both.

I've only known the 4,000 RPM rev limiter to be when revving in Neutral or Park. Or is there a "teen driver" or "valet" key you're using?

I don't know about in gear, I was in park, it just seemed odd to me, I just changed the oil on Monday so it was fresh oil and filter. Engine has always been super strong ( I only have 63000 miles on my Tahoe) but it's the first engine I've owned with a rev limiter.

Ah, that explains it. You were in Park, not flooring it in gear to accelerate. My '08 does it, too.

I have to ask, what sort of emergency could one have that would require a hard rev when not in gear?

I can certainly confirm that my truck winds (nearly) to 6 in gear. Sometimes when I’m in a hurry, and sometimes when I selected “L” rather than “D” by mistake.

rpm governor when not in gear has been a thing for quite while across most manufacturers.

Limited in park and neutral to 4,000, in gear you’re limited to wherever the shift points are at.

You can have your tune played with to get the full 6,000 when not in gear if you want.

I think they started doing it on the 07+ on my 2012 it's limited to about 3000-3500 in park, on my 2018 it was limited to 4k I had BB take it off
