Hello, fng here. Im a long time lifted jeep grand cherokee owner, sold now i want another suv. These trucks seem tough and last a while, longer than my Heep. Im looking at 03 and 04 at 100k or under since they are in my cheap budget. I will look at the stickied thread about buying. Anything strange to look out for or avoid aside from usual leaks, transmission, TC, rear end noises. Any and all advice welcome!

One I'm looking at needs inner and outer tie rods and thats it, he says. I haven't seen it yet. He is the third owner, nonsmoker. Link: http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/5778473198.html. I can do most repairs myself aside from alignment other other specialty repairs or engine rebuild (maybe?)

I see it doesn't have steering wheel controls. Is this all i need to make them work with a new steering wheel?

Wanna buy mine? I've got an 04 4x4 LS

The harness, steering wheel, a lot of time and effort, and a few tools.

Thanks. Sure if youre in Md, lol.

Does this have rack and pinion? What years do? I hate recirculating ball steering. My grand marquis has it.

I'm actually in NC, few hours from where you found the craigslist ad. And honestly I'm not sure as to the rack and pinion part...

Rack and pinion? Huh? Let me bring you to the real world of Yuki's and this vintage. The reason we all are here is because GM made a huge error during these years. They built trucks that rarely broke and thus pissed of the dealers. These are pick-up trucks with a different body. I know a lot of commercial guys who run these routinely to 450k and that is beating the living crap out of them. You will put in a transmission with the 5.3, the 4L60E in one word, blows. The good news is that when it goes, they open the case, dump all of the parts out and everything going in has been redesigned.

Since these are made to last, and not sports cars, you will not find rack and pinion. They have steering boxes. I just had to replace my beloved 2000 Yuki XL SLT because someone decided to try and do a U-Turn through it. Protected the family nicely, but insurance totaled it. It took me two weeks of looking at a lot of junk to find one that had no rust/rot in front of the rear wheel wells, had not been crashed into everything and was clean. Of course it has the Z55 suspension, which is another story.

Hopefully this will help you on your journey.

Very helpful, thanks!!!! After my last post I see the 4wd were all recirculating ball steering.

Im looking at some high mileage ones at 200k. As long as it has a nice clean interior and well maintained I will buy it. Im looking at these 2 this weekend since have the nicest interiors. I realize I may have to woory about a tranny, front/rear axle, front suspension, wheel bearings, and TC rebuild. But hopefull if maintained they will last

That Z71 could be a great buy. Yeah, you may need to deal with rebuilding the front end & replacing wheel bearings but it's not certain the trans will fail (soon).

Good luck.
