Yep. They definitely are prone to failure. My dad has owned an 07 Sierra and currently owns a 12 Sierra. Both had AFM. To my knowledge, he never had an issue with the 07. The 12 though, has been in the shop twice. The first time he brought it in, they only changed the lifters on one side. Right after he got it back, it started acting up. The other side had failed, because they didn't change both sides while it was in the shop.
So, if his 07 didn't have a problem with them, but the 12 did. I will give you 50/50 odds on AFM not experiencing a failure.
