I borrowed the image below from a member's photobucket account. I don't think he will mind.

Anyhow, why does it have
P R N D M as the driveline choices????

Mine has P R N D 3 2 1.

the 'M' is for the transmissions that have the option of manually shifting through the gears (kinda like paddle shifting). My dad has this in his '10 Silvy Crew. So when in 'M' he can move up and down in gears at will with his shift lever.

The M is when they went to the six speed trany's. But like Jacob said it is for manual shifting but only the 6 speed tranys have that option.

Interesting! But I think I would want an automatic transmission to do it's it thing all by itself.

Wonder how this "manual" shifting will affect the life of the transmission?

probably not much at all cuz i'd bet the vast majority of folks never use the 'M' feature...

The "M" does exactly the same thing as your transmission having the 1-2-3 selections just with the button instead so it doesn't affect the life of the transmission at all...

I have it in my Silverado. It's a nice feature for towing or going down long, steep hills
