Hey guys,
I got a code last week about my knock sensors not working so I undertook the task of replacing them myself. Of course in the process I replaced my intake manifold gaskets. I have to say, it improved my performance noticeably. The gaskets were flattened out quite a bit and there was a lot of buildup on the intake and heads which I scraped off. I used the Fel-Pro Perma-dry Plus gaskets and I must say they are really nice. They have a metal bracket that holds the gaskets in place and it hangs on 2 of the head studs so you can mount the intake easily. Also replace the throttle body gasket and re-wired the knock sensor harness since everyone seems to have problems with it eventually.
Only down side to the whole operation is that I had to buy a torque wrench that does in/lbs. I looked all over town for one I could rent or buy cheap but the only place that had one that would work for the intake bolts was at Sears for $80. So if anyone in the Austin, TX area needs an in/lbs torque wrench let me know...I'll be glad to loan it to you.
Overall, i'd say the difficulty of the job was about a 7 but definitely worth it since a mechanic bills out the labor at $90 an hour and that job is 2.7 hours plus parts.
