It's curious to me that the SS Camaro got the Rock Crusher and the Z28 had the wide ratio Muncie. My buddies '70 Z28 split bumper had a 302 with the M22. Was a lot of fun to whip around the neighborhood.I keep an Excel spreadsheet of my vehicles past & present. Each has it's own page to track any work done.

Back in the 70s I got to drive my friend's 70 Nova powered by a DZ302 with the factory cross ram dual 4bl, M22 & 4.88 gears. Boy could that motor hit those high notes. It's curious to me that the SS Camaro got the Rock Crusher and the Z28 had the wide ratio Muncie. My buddies '70 Z28 split bumper had a 302 with the M22. Back when I ordered 1969 Chevelle you had to pick that option if you were interested in manual between 3spd which it would come stock with a manual automatic was extra. You could get M20 Wide ratio M21 close ratio or the m22 Rock Crusher. It's curious to me that the SS Camaro got the Rock Crusher and the Z28 had the wide ratio Muncie. I guess my memory is fading with the passage of time, thought the M21 was the wide ratio and the M22 was the close ratio and the M20 was more pedestrian.Back when I ordered 1969 Chevelle you had to pick that option if you were interested in manual between 3spd which it would come stock with a manual automatic was extra. M20 and M21 were helical cut gears and M22 was what they called straight cut gears which made them stronger but noisier that's where the word rock crusher.Back in day with large slicks they wanted close ratio M21 for best hole shot with tall tires. So yes, M22 was close ratio and M20 was more normal driving.I guess my memory is fading with the passage of time, thought the M21 was the wide ratio and the M22 was the close ratio and the M20 was more pedestrian.
Ahh, that's right! Boy, I haven't thought of such things in decades! I went through a box in the garage today which was full of things from way back when, brought back a lot of memories long forgotten.M20 and M21 were helical cut gears and M22 was what they called straight cut gears which made them stronger but noisier that's where the word rock crusher.Back in day with large slicks they wanted close ratio M21 for best hole shot with tall tires.
