Just installed a new K&N high flow cold air intake and the engine growls at random speeds, not just open throttle. Pulling from a light and easy on the pedal it growls, shifting from 2nd to 3rd it growls, open throttle this thing sounds like a T-Rex. While I love the sound at OT, the other instances are a bit too much!! So my question, since I’ve installed it and can’t take it back, would a smaller Filter fix my issue. I don’t have a ton of options as the Flange diameter is 6 inches but I do see smaller units available on the K&N site.

I used the mini kit, just the intake tube from the throttle body to the stock air filter housing and a K&N filter, stock Suburban sized. It sounds great. It has a nice growl when accelerating. You might see if another brand or type of filter would fit. I know some vehicles use a paper, stock, type of material.

Changing filter types probably won’t make the difference you are seeking. I covered one of the openings once years ago, leaving only the opening toward the wheel well. It did reduce some of the growl, but not all.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think restricting the flow is the way to go, that’s why I thought of a smaller filter. I might try one of K&N own Dryflow filters, the one I am thinking is a couple of inches shorter than the one I currently have.
