looking To Install Factory Nav Radio. Have Some Questions First

I'm wanting to install a factory nav headunit in my 2004 Yukon SLT with Bose. I read on another forum that someone with an 04 Tahoe was able to just plug the new stereo in and it worked fine. He mentioned he had to plug in the navigation antenna as well. So I'm wondering where the antenna port would be located in my vehicle.

Also does anyone know if you have to pay for OnStar for the navigation to work? Or just an OnStar system? I'm not sure if it even uses OnStar... I'd appreciate some clarity on that.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to unlock a radio at the dealer and would I need the original VIN number?

you would need to purchase the Nav antenna. It goes behind the head unit close to the windshield. It will have to be programmed for the VIN of your vehicle unless you buy one that's already been unlocked. OnStar is a separate unit and has nothing to do with GPS. When I did my 04 Esky radio, the dealer charged me 1 hour labor

Perfect, thank you! So you're saying that the antenna just sits on your dash? And do you think that would be very expensive at the dealer or should I look for it on eBay or something? I could always go ask the dealer I suppose.

There's a little plate up top it will sit on. Once you take your radio out, look towards the front where the dash meets the windshield

What is "that"? getting the radio from the dealer? yes! Check craigslist or eBay.

Also the one I'm looking at came from a 2005 H2. Do you know if that would still be a non lux? The number is 15800000

probably still cheaper on eBay. Some people who sell Nav radios sell the antenna as well. Usually because they're swapping everything to aftermarket.


I will tell you though an aftermarket Nav will function 100 times better than the factory nav. You'll have HD Radio, aux inputs, back up camera option, etc.

Alright I'll see what I can find. Yeah its pretty tempting to go aftermarket but I kind of like the stock look for the interior. And all the interfaces don't sound like much fun. I think I would need 3 interfaces for an aftermarket setup. I already have 2 and it really sucks if I have to take the radio out for something. Maybe I'll look around... It'd be cheaper than the stock radio.

Don't forget that you will need the NAV CD as well. I installed a Nav HU from a hummer with no problems on my 2004. I don't use the Nav, I wanted the HU for a backup camera. cost me about $100 to get the HU unlocked.

I'm assuming that the nav disc gets installed and then you don't need it after that? Great, that makes me less nervous about this radio. So how did you get a rearview camera to work on the stock radio?

As I said, I don't use the Nav but I believe you need the Nav disk in the player to use the Nav. Which mean's if you don't install a 6 cd changer, you can't play CD's when using the Nav. I had to buy an aftermarket unit to use the backup camera. (forget the brand off hand) Got it from ebay. IMO a backup camera is well worth it. I can backup up and put the ball directly under a trailer hitch with no problems. Plus normal backup views.
