It will only be a temporary fix. If it is clunking it really needs to be replaced and the fluid system flushed out.

x2 Also Tighting that screw will eventually make a loose steering box worse

I searched for that ac delco steering gear but its remanufactured.. I guess it could be good as new, but are there any other options? Has anyone tried the AGR steering gear boxes? On their website it says it will work on vehicles with the evo sensor if you buy a hose.

If you see no worn out components in your front end, the loose steering feel in our vintage OBS vehicle is usually due to a failure of one of two sensors; Its hardly ever the steering box itself unless someone had already been adjusting the lash!
That being said, boxes do wear out and need to be replaced.

The two sensors are the EVO sensor on the back of the PS pump and the steering speed sensor on the bottom of the steering column. Both of these sensors control the amount steering fluid sent to the PS Box by the PS Pump.
The speed sensor controls flow electronically, the EVO sensor electro/mechancially.

By design when these sensors wear out/go bad they fail in the open mode, allowing maximum fluid flow into our PS systems which either make the steering feel super light or feel twitchy/jerky, like you just hit a patch of ice.

Think of a garden hose here, If you had a hose that had controlled flow to say 3/4 flow and you released the control, you'd have 25% more flow(think easier steering). or if some one was messing with your garden hose as you were using it and was pinching it off and releaseing it you'd have a pulse type flow, (think the twitching/jerking of our steering wheel).

You can get a new sensor for the steering column but you cannot get a new one for the PS pump, in fact GM did away with that sensor and came back with a U shaped hard line to replace the EVO sensor which allows a constant supply of PS fluid to the steering gear.

Best fix I've found is to do away with both of these and go with an earlier Pre 97, design. Ie no EVO and no speed sensor.

How??
1st step
Removing the EVO sensor and install the U shaped hard line or a PS hose that comes directly out of the PS pump.
2nd step
Replace the steeirng gear with a high quality, well manufactured one where you can select the steering effort required. Heavy, medium/heavy, medium, medium/light, light .....
I used a RedHead rebuilt with a medium/light feel/touch.
I also replaced the PS pump with a NEW AC Delco one because the remanufactured one was whining against my new steering gear, Also I had plans for hydroboost so I figured why not.
Took me a while to figure it all out but i'm 100% satisfied with the constant steering feel (ie no twitching, ever!) and I require a medium effort to steer at any speed ,(ie not over assisted.)
Sorry for the long winded post.

Can't comment on the AGR gear, but I have the Redhead gears in both a 72 K5 Blazer and a 76 Bronco; both BJ quality stock restorations.
If you recall I had initially used a medium feel box and was unsatisfied with the performance, Redhead worked with me and sent me out a medium light feel and a light feel box for me to try.
I highly recommend them.

I thought I've read taht you could replace the EVO sensor.

I've looked at the AGR, but will also look at the redhead. What grade of resistance did you go with?

EVO solenoid IS replaceable in that it comes out/off of pump, however I was not able to locate a new or a even a rebuilt one. GM did away with that part and replaced it with the U shaped hard line.

As for my steering gear; I initially started with a medium feel, but was unhappy(too stiff) and I had PS pump whine with the just installed Cardone rebuilt.
I changed the gear out to a medium light feel and the pump out to a new AcDelco one (with Hydorboost option for a later upgrade).
