Loss of Oil

New to site and looking for advice on a issue I just noticed with my Tahoe. I have a 2008 Tahoe 5.3 flex fuel with 73k miles. I just bought the vehicle this winter and did a service on it. Changed all fluids to amsoil, changed all filters, spark plugs, etc. Checked the oil today and it was low! Still in the hash marks, but lower than when I changed the oil 1800 miles ago. Had to order additional from amsoil to top off, not sure at moment how low till the oil comes in.

Did some searching online and seems to be common problem, but I'm not gathering a common solution so I'm not sure where to start with fixing the issue.

Thinking back to when I serviced it I cleaned the intake with amsoil power foam and recall the intake being very oily and black. Should I start with removing the driver side valve cover and check for a cover for the pcv system?

I'm a little worried because the fixes range from new piston rings and valve seals to just updating the valve cover to just having to live with the issue. Some say the dealers have fixed the issue for free, but I don't know where I fall as far as a warranty.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!

Get the new valve cover and install a catch can.
Its probably time to do your knock sensors as well, this will give your a opportunity to clean all the "missing" oil out of your intake manifold.

When ordering a new valve cover from dealer how can I make sure I'm getting the new updated style and not the current style?

One last question

Just wondering what the reasoning would be for changing the knock sensor or sensors? Mileage or possibly affected from burning the oil? Good idea to change if removing intake to clean?

This is why. They all do this, its just a matter of time.



Exactly. If you pop the intake off to clean it, might as well do the knock sensors, since you have them exposed.
Just be smart seal them with silicone and replace the harness at the same time, it gets brittle from the heat and breaks.
Use OEM parts, no cheaping out on this.
There are tons of write ups and youtube videos on how to do it, if you need.

If you want to really have some fun. Use "hushmat" and line the bottom of the intake manifold to help reduce your IAT's and heatsoak.

This^^^, everything he said. For the oil consumption, a catch can (or PCV reroute as it is commonly known) will help to solve that, otherwise you are literally burning your high dollar Amsoil

Thanks for info and pics! Always looking to improve and maintain the best I can. Once I do the valve cover and catch can and can confirm I'm not loosing large amounts of oil I'll proceed with cleaning intake, knock sensors, and look into the hushmat. Thanks again!

I am experiencing the same oil loss in an 02 v8 5.3. Engine bay is clean so no obvious leakage...could this be a remedy for an 02 as well? Thanks.
